 Steam locomotive family tree
Steam locomotive family tree

A genealogy tracing 130 years of steam locomotive evolution
by Neil Carlson

During its 130-year life span, the American steam locomotive evolved from a frail machine capable of pulling only a handful of cars to a steel behemoth that could haul freight trains of 10,000 tons or more.

WP&Y 4-6-0 and NP 4-8-4

White Pass & Yukon 4-6-0 No. 10, built by Baldwin for the East Tennessee & Western North Carolina in 1910, poses next to newly shopped Northern Pacific 4-8-4 No. 2603, an Alco product from 1926. The two were photographed at NP’s shops in South Tacoma, Wash., in 1942.

The great advances made in steam locomotive technology were driven by the economic needs of the country. Industrial expansion and population growth required heavier and faster trains, which required yet larger and more powerful locomotives. The locomotive industry met the railroads’ demand for more power by inventing tools to boost an engine’s power and efficiency, and by creatively introducing new locomotive wheel arrangements that improved on existing designs.

For example, as passenger train schedules were tightened in the 1920s, the railroads needed a more powerful 4-6-2 — the prevailing passenger locomotive type. But a more powerful 4-6-2 required a much larger firebox. So to support it, a four-wheel trailing truck was incorporated, thereby creating a new wheel arrangement, the 4-6-4.

Im hoping the color is good on your eyes and you find the website easy to use.. We are striving hard to make your experience enjoyable whilst visiting our website and learning more about our assosication.

Dont forget if you have tips for any of the transformations you see around the site please contact the webmaster...

What does database driven mean??
To put it simply it means that you all may sign up automatically for your own user account.. You may then interact on our site and add your comments to our news stories, submit new links and many many more features..

In short, the site will be more then enough to hold the information we require and all users will have a unique experience and be able to interact..

Please note that website is currently under development and is a part time project for the webmaster. Pplease bare with us as we expand the site from its current form.. There is much work to do with writing database's so that all our members who own locomotive's may display their own pics.

Alot of thought has gone into the design of the new website but if you have some suggestions please contact us from our contact us page located here.

For more information on our Running Days please check the associated link from the top header.
Just a short News Story to promote the opening of the basic site..
